TestComplete FAQ - Licensing Questions

Q: What types of software licenses are offered by AutomatedQA?

A: AutomatedQA offers flexible licensing options, including 2 major license types; Named User Licenses and Floating User Licenses.

Named User License:

A named user license allows the software to be used by one specific user named when you purchase the software. The named user license may be installed on a maximum of two computers, the named user's desktop computer and the named user’s portable computer. The installed software may be accessed by the licensed user only, it may not be shared in any way. A named user license may not be used at the same time on different computers.

Floating User Licenses:

A floating user license, sometimes known as a concurrent or shared license, allows the software to be used by more than one user on the same network but limits the number of simultaneous users to the number of licenses purchased. The goal of a floating license is to allow multiple individuals to leverage a single license of the software.

Each floating user license may only be used by one individual at a time.

We recommend the following floating license to team size ratios.

  • Heavy usage 1 to 3: Purchase 1 floating user license for every 3 individuals in the group.
  • Moderate usage 1 to 6: Purchase 1 floating user license for every 6 individuals in the group.
  • Light usage 1 to 10: Purchase buy 1 floating license for every 10 individuals in the group.
Q: How do I install and register an AutomatedQA product I have purchased?

A: The product download, installation and registration procedure is as follows:

  1. Log into your account on the ClientServices portal (https://clientservices.automatedqa.com) using your Email address, Security ID and portal login password and navigate to the product download page.
  2. On the client services product download page you will find the Registration information (User name, Company name and Registration code, which is a three-part 24-character code), the product download link and the installation password (registration password is located next to the download link, 19 characters).
  3. Download and install the product using the download link and the installation password.
  4. Launch the product and register it using the Registration information.

Please note that all of the fields of the registration are case-sensitive. Also, please make sure that there are no leading or trailing spaces.

Q: Can I move an AutomatedQA product license from one computer to another?

A: Yes, uninstall from the computer on which it is currently installed and then install on the new computer.

Q: How do we change the Named User listed on my product registration?

A: Send an email to sales@automatedqa.com with the old license information and the new name you’d like to have as the Named User.

Q: Do I need to buy a license server for floating user licenses?

A: No. A license server is not required at this time.

Q: How can I upgrade from a named user license to a floating user license?

A: Most product prices and upgrade prices are published on the AQA website, so you can research or order an upgrade to an existing license. Additionally you can request assistance by contacting us by phone at +1 (978) 236-7900 and choosing option #2 to reach sales or by sending an e-mail to sales@automatedqa.com.

Q: Do I need to purchase a TestComplete license for my build server or other mostly unattended computer that runs tests?

A: Yes, you will need to purchase a license for any computer that runs TestComplete tests.

If you just need to run tests, not create or edit them, then you can use TestExecute. This is a low-cost, resource-friendly utility that was designed to run TestComplete projects on computers that do not have TestComplete installed.

Q: How can I buy a site license for TestComplete or TestExecute?

A: Site licenses are not available for AQA products, however we do understand some clients requirements to invest in AQA products for all of their users.  We have flexible licensing options to accommodate any requirement.  Please contact us by phone at +1 (978) 236-7900 and choose option #2 to reach sales or send an e-mail to sales@automatedqa.com.  We will be happy to assist with your licensing requirements.

Q: How is TestExecute licensed?

A: TestExecute is licensed as a Floating User License and its use is outlined under the Floating User License terms summarized above and detailed in the product EULA.

Q: How is TestRecorder licensed?

TestRecorder is a developer component which can be embedded and distributed in your application without royalties. You must purchase a TestRecorder license for each developer who will use TestRecorder. Complete details are in the product EULA.

Q: Can I use my registration key to upgrade the trial version to the full version?
Q: When I enter the registration information into the trial version, it displays an error that says the registration information is invalid and does not register. What happened?

A: The trial version is not upgradeable. Please download the full version from the client services portal and use the registration key after install when you first run the product.

Q: Can we redistribute TestExecute with our application?

A: To distribute TestExecute with your application, purchase one license of TestExecute for each end-user that will run it. Quantity licensing is available. To learn about quantity licensing options, contact us by phone at +1 (978) 236-7900 and choose option #2 to reach sales or send an e-mail to sales@automatedqa.com.

Q: Can we redistribute our application that uses the TestRecorder library?

A: Yes, you can distribute applications compiled with the TestRecorder library without paying royalties.

The library’s functions are compiled into your application and your application can be distributed freely with those functions included. You may not distribute the stand-alone TestRecorder library, but you won’t need to.

Q: Can we install our purchased TestRecorder license for each of our developers?

A: Yes, once you purchase a license for TestComplete Enterprise, you can install TestRecorder for other developers at your site. We encourage you to compile your applications with the TestRecorder library and  add test recording functionality. Any developer in your organization is allowed to install and use the TestRecorder library that comes with your purchased TestComplete Enterprise license.

Of course, anyone who needs to view and edit the scripts created by the TestRecorder library will need to purchase a TestComplete license.
